You’re not irresponsible. You couldn’t do it if you wanted to. It’s not about you or your behavior. ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) isn’t a childhood quirk or an excuse. It’s a neurodevelopmental condition that affects approximately 4-5% of adults. And most of them only discover it in their thirties, forties, and sometimes fifties. After decades of believing there was something wrong with them.

Why is ADHD so often overlooked in adults?

We have an image of a child with ADHD—restless, noisy, unable to sit still. But an adult with ADHD is quite different. Visible hyperactivity is replaced by an internal feeling of being “stuck,” emotional instability, chronic procrastination, and difficulty organizing their life. Outwardly, this looks like “personality.” Or “laziness.” Or “lack of self-discipline.”

According to research, approximately 60–70% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms into adulthood, although their presentation changes. But because adults learn to mask, compensate, and “stretch,” the disorder goes unnoticed. And for years, the person believes the problem lies within them.

What does ADHD look like in adulthood?

ADHD in adulthood presents a completely different picture. It’s no longer just about restlessness (usually seen in boys). Adults with ADHD experience the most severe problems in areas such as work, relationships, everyday life, and emotions.

When it comes to work, adults with ADHD often procrastinate (even on the most important and urgent tasks), starting dozens of projects and finishing only a few. They find it difficult to concentrate if the task is uninteresting—and impossible to stop if they get carried away. They constantly forget deadlines, meetings, and details of conversations. It often feels like you’re working twice as hard as everyone else, yet the results are worse.

Написать в WhatsApp

In their everyday lives, adults with ADHD constantly face chaos that’s difficult to explain and even more difficult to clean up. They lose things, forget where they put things. These people find it difficult to stick to a routine, even when they really want to. Reminders and lists don’t help.

Emotionally, such people are also “chaotic.” They often react sharply to trivial things and then feel ashamed. They have a hard time cooling down after a conflict. They are hypersensitive to criticism (one remark can ruin their entire day).

In relationships, adults with ADHD may seem indifferent. It’s difficult for them to be present in a conversation, and it often feels like they’re simply not listening.

If you recognize yourself in this incomplete list, it’s not your “personality.” It’s a pattern with a specific cause.

ADHD in Women: A Peculiar Invisibility

I’d like to discuss women specifically, as their experience with ADHD often goes unnoticed. Women typically exhibit predominantly inattentive rather than hyperactive symptoms, making early recognition of the disorder difficult. Furthermore, women are more likely to experience low self-esteem, increased anxiety, and difficulties in social interactions.

Women are also better at disguising themselves. They’re good at buying time, testing themselves 200 times, and compensating with extreme effort. On the outside, everything looks good. Inside, they’re constantly exhausted from trying to “be normal.” Research shows that women with undiagnosed ADHD often internalize criticism and describe painfully low self-esteem, guilt, shame, and a negative self-perception due to the delayed diagnosis.

Years of “I just don’t try hard enough” leave a deep mark. And when an explanation finally emerges, it’s not just relief. It’s often a grief over what could have been a different life.

“Is this really ADHD?” is the question everyone has.

After reading the symptoms, many people think, “But isn’t this just ordinary absentmindedness? Everyone forgets things sometimes.” But the difference lies in the scale and persistence. ADHD is diagnosed when symptoms are persistent, present in multiple areas of life (work, home, relationships), and significantly interfere with living the life you want.

Another marker: if you have “islands”—topics or tasks where you suddenly focus perfectly and can work for hours without stopping—this is also characteristic of ADHD. This isn’t “selective laziness”; it’s hyperfocus—another aspect of the same disorder.

Why a diagnosis is not the end, but the beginning

Many people with ADHD, upon receiving a diagnosis, describe it as, “Finally, everything clicked.” Years of self-blame are explained. It turns out it’s not a personality issue—it’s neurobiology.
But a diagnosis is just the beginning. Because then questions arise:
— What to do now with years of shame?
— How to build relationships where you’re understood?
— How to find strategies that work for your brain?
— How to stop hating yourself for “failing” again?
This is where psychological support comes in.

Написать в WhatsApp

What does psychological work for ADHD look like?

I want to be honest: I don’t diagnose or prescribe medications—psychiatrists do that. If you suspect ADHD and haven’t yet been diagnosed, the first step should be to see a doctor. But psychological work is a whole other level. It’s necessary even when a diagnosis has already been made and even when medications are helping.

What we do together in therapy:
We work through accumulated shame. Years of “I’m a loser,” “I have no willpower,” “why am I like this”—these aren’t just opinions. They are wounds that influence every decision. The Gestalt approach allows you to face this pain and gradually let go.
We find your strategies. Standard time management advice often doesn’t work for ADHD because it’s designed for a different brain type. We find what works for you.
We’re working with emotional instability. Harsh reactions, hypersensitivity to criticism, difficulty cooling off—all of this can be managed more gently and effectively. Don’t suppress it, but learn to be with it.
Accepting ourselves without criteria. It sounds trite, but for someone with ADHD who has spent their entire life feeling “insufficient,” it’s a true revolution.
Improving relationships. ADHD affects everyone around us. We’re learning how to talk about our differences, how to ask for support, and how to avoid feeling constantly guilty in front of our loved ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to have ADHD and still be successful?
Yes—and this is one of the reasons why ADHD is so often overlooked. Many people with ADHD are extremely creative, energetic, and capable of hyperfocus on their subject matter. Success and ADHD are not mutually exclusive. But the price of this success—exhaustion from constant compensation—can be very high.
I’m already 40. Isn’t it too late to figure this out?
It’s not too late. Understanding yourself at 40 is better than never understanding yourself. People diagnosed late often say, “I finally understand my life.” Psychological work is effective at any age.
Do I need medicine?
This is a decision for a psychiatrist, not a psychologist. Medication exists and is very helpful for many people. But medication and psychological work are not an “either/or” approach, but a “and.” They address different issues.
I’m a woman and I’m told I have anxiety. Maybe I do?
Anxiety and ADHD often go hand in hand, especially in women. Anxiety can be a consequence of years of managing ADHD. But it can also be a distinct condition. A good professional will work with you to figure this out. If you’re told “it’s just anxiety,” you have the right to ask again and receive a detailed answer.
Is it possible to work online?
Yes. The online format is even more convenient for many people with ADHD—there’s no need to leave home and get ready for a visit. We meet on Zoom, in your usual space.
Where do I start if I’m not sure it’s ADHD?
Just write down what’s bothering you. Together, at our first meeting, we’ll figure out whether it’s ADHD or something else, and where to go from there.

You deserve an explanation—and support.

If you’ve spent your entire adult life feeling like you’re falling behind, like you’re not keeping up, like “you could have done it if you wanted to”—and yet you’ve genuinely tried—you deserve a different conversation. Not “just try harder.” Not “everyone forgets sometimes.” But an honest, warm conversation about how your brain really works—and how to live well with it.

Contact me.
